The official General Studies syllabus has one line on art and culture. It opens mains General Studies Paper I, whose title begins with Indian heritage and culture: Indian culture covers the salient aspects of art forms, literature and architecture from ancient to modern times.

The prelims syllabus does not name art or culture; in our reading, culture falls under its line on the history of India. This page sets out both lines in UPSC's words from the CSE 2026 notice, and what they mean for your preparation.

The art and culture syllabus, paper by paper

UPSC groups its syllabus by paper, not by subject, so the choice of which lines count as art and culture is Decode Civils' reading of the official syllabus. The lines themselves are quoted exactly. One line can belong to more than one subject; both of these are also on our history page.

How UPSC asks about art and culture

  • It heads a paper on heritage. GS Paper I's title begins with Indian heritage and culture, and this is the paper's first line, ahead of the lines on history, society and geography.
  • Three forms are named. Art forms, literature and architecture. "Art forms" is not broken down further; in our reading it covers painting, sculpture, music, dance and theatre.
  • "Salient aspects" sets the depth. Salient means the most important or noticeable, so the line asks for the main features of each form rather than a complete catalogue.
  • The span is the whole of Indian history. From ancient to modern times. Among the history lines of GS Paper I, it is the only one that reaches back before the eighteenth century.
  • Prelims leaves culture inside history. The prelims line names the history of India and the Indian National Movement, and does not mention culture.

For all the mains GS papers, the notice says questions are set so that a well-educated person can answer them without any specialised study. So aim to explain what makes a style or tradition distinctive and why it matters, rather than to memorise long lists of names.

How to prepare from the art and culture syllabus

  • Organise by form, then by period. Make separate notes for architecture, sculpture, painting, the performing arts and literature, each running from ancient to modern times.
  • Tie each form to its period and patrons. A temple style or a school of painting is easier to remember with the dynasty and region that produced it.
  • Cover every region. The line is about Indian culture as a whole, so include the art, literature and architecture of different regions and languages, not only the best-known monuments.
  • Look at the real thing. Look at photographs of the monuments, paintings and sculptures you read about, not just descriptions of them.
  • Keep a glossary. Architectural and artistic terms are easy to confuse, so write a one-line definition for each as you meet it.
  • Connect culture with the news. When a site or an art form is in the news, add it to your notes under the right form and period.

For each paper's complete syllabus, see the prelims syllabus and the GS Paper 1 syllabus. Both lines here are also on our history syllabus page.

The History optional syllabus covers culture period by period: its first paper includes art and architecture, literature and themes in early Indian cultural history, and names Mughal architecture, Mughal painting and classical music.
