You can sit the Civil Services Exam while you hold a job. UPSC's notice asks every candidate, employed or not, to apply directly to UPSC, and it adds one rule for government employees. The harder part is time. The process takes more than a year: for CSE 2025, applications closed on 21 February 2025 and the final result came on 6 March 2026. And you will need leave on fixed dates.

This guide covers the official rules and dates first, then planning advice. The rules and dates are UPSC's; the planning is our suggestion.

What the rules say if you are employed

  • Everyone applies directly. The notice says candidates in government service, in government-owned undertakings or in private jobs all submit their applications straight to UPSC.
  • Government employees give an undertaking. If you are in government service, permanent, temporary or work-charged (other than casual or daily-rated), or serve in a public enterprise, you must give an undertaking that you have told your Head of Office or Department in writing that you have applied.
  • Your employer can block it. If your employer writes to UPSC withholding permission, your application is liable to be rejected or your candidature cancelled.
  • Your work goes on your application. Before the interview you update your employment details and service experience online, and the notice says the interview board has a record of your career before it.

The notice sets no such undertaking for private employment. Either way, check your employer's own rules on leave and outside activities early.

The dates to plan your leave around

StageCSE 2027 (UPSC calendar)What happened last time
Notification and applicationNotification 13 January 2027; apply by 2 February 2027CSE 2026: notice dated 4 February 2026; UPSC's exam page lists the last date as 27 February 2026 (the notice said 24 February)
Prelims23 May 2027, one dayCSE 2026: held on 24 May 2026, result on 15 June 2026
MainsFrom 20 August 2027, five daysCSE 2026: papers on 21, 22, 23, 29 and 30 August 2026
InterviewNot in the calendarCSE 2025: December 2025 to February 2026

Two things in the table matter for leave. The calendar gives the mains five exam days, but they can be spread out: the CSE 2026 mains ran from 21 to 30 August, so plan leave for the whole span, not just the exam days. And UPSC's notice for the CSE 2025 interviews said requests to change an interview date or time would not ordinarily be entertained. The calendar itself says its dates can change, so confirm them in each year's notice.

Planning your time

There is no official number of hours that clears this exam, and we don't suggest one. What helps a working candidate is a steady weekly rhythm:

  • Weekdays for short, steady work. Current events, revision of what you studied at the weekend, a short CSAT set or one practice answer. Small daily blocks add up because they are regular.
  • Weekends for depth. New topics, your optional, and full-length tests, which need long unbroken time.
  • Fewer sources, more revision. With less time, the cost of an extra book is high. Pick one source per topic from the booklist and revise it.
  • Use the gaps. A commute by bus or train, or a lunch break, is enough for a page of revision notes or the day's PIB releases.
  • Spend leave where it counts most. In our view, that is the weeks just before the prelims for revision and mock tests, and the mains itself.
  • Look at your optional through your work. If your degree or job overlaps with a subject on the optional list, it may save you time; read its syllabus and past papers before deciding.

A full plan, with a yearly and weekly structure, is in the study timetable guide.

Should you leave your job?

No official source can answer this for you, and it depends on things only you know. Questions worth asking yourself:

  • How many attempts and years do you have left? The age and attempts calculator will tell you.
  • How are your scores in full-length tests and past papers moving?
  • Could you get leave, or a lighter role, around the exam dates instead?
  • How long could you support yourself without a salary?

Your job and the interview

The interview tests your personal suitability for public service, and the board has a record of your career before it. Be ready to talk about what you do, what you have learned from it and how it connects to public service. See the UPSC interview guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I prepare for UPSC while working?

Yes. The notice lets employed candidates apply like anyone else, directly to UPSC. Government employees must also give an undertaking that they have told their Head of Office or Department in writing that they have applied.

Do government employees need permission to apply for UPSC?

The notice requires the undertaking above, and says that if your employer writes to UPSC withholding permission, your application is liable to be rejected. Your own service rules may say more, so check them before you apply.

How many hours should a working professional study for UPSC?

No official source gives a figure, and we don't either. Plan by the week instead: short, regular sessions on weekdays, longer ones at weekends, with revision and tests built in.

Will my work experience help in the UPSC interview?

The notice gives no marks for experience as such. But you update your employment details before the interview, and the board has a record of your career before it, so expect questions about your work.
