An IPS officer's basic pay runs from ₹56,100 a month for a new officer, the first cell of Level 10 of the pay matrix, to a fixed ₹2,25,000 a month for the Director General of Police who heads a police force, at Level 17. The Indian Police Service (Pay) Rules, 2016 fix the level of every grade in between, and allowances are paid on top. This page lists each level with its basic pay range, the rank that goes with it, the years of service after which each grade opens, and the badge of rank set by the IPS (Uniform) Rules, 1954.
Dearness allowance is paid on top of basic pay at the Central Government rate, which IPS officers get under rule 3 of the All India Services (Dearness Allowance) Rules, 1972: 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. A new IPS officer's basic pay plus DA is therefore ₹89,760 a month. House rent allowance (or government housing) and other allowances depend on the posting, and income tax and other deductions come out of the total, so no single "in-hand" figure is official.
IPS salary per month by grade
The last column adds dearness allowance to the first cell of each level, the lowest basic pay in the grade. An officer's actual pay is usually higher: increments move it down the level, and pay on promotion is fixed from the pay already drawn plus an increment. All figures are before house rent allowance, other allowances and deductions.

Basic pay: DoPT: Indian Police Service (Pay) Rules, 2016 (MHA copy); DoPT: Indian Police Service (Pay) Amendment Rules, 2017 (revised pay matrix), MHA copy. DA: 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026 for Central Government employees (PIB (Ministry of Finance), 18 April 2026: Cabinet approves additional instalment of Dearness Allowance to Central Government employees and Dearness Relief to pensioners w.e.f. 01.01.2026), which IPS officers draw under rule 3 of the All India Services (Dearness Allowance) Rules, 1972. The last column is the first, lowest cell of each level plus DA; increments, and pay fixed on promotion, usually put an officer higher. It leaves out house rent allowance or government housing, other allowances, and income tax and other deductions.
The amounts are the first and last cells of each level in the pay matrix as substituted by the IPS (Pay) Amendment Rules, 2017. The matrix printed with the rules in 2016 started Level 13 at ₹1,18,500; the 2017 amendment replaced it, and Level 13 now starts at ₹1,23,100.
When each grade comes: salary by years of service
The levels are from rule 3 of the pay rules. Years count from your year of allotment.
| Grade or rank | Level | Eligible after |
|---|---|---|
| Junior Scale (on joining) | 10 | Appointment |
| Senior Time Scale | 11 | 4 years |
| Junior Administrative Grade | 12 | 9 years and Phase III training |
| Selection Grade | 13 | 13 years, by selection |
| Deputy Inspector General of Police | 13A | 14 years, by selection |
| Inspector General of Police | 14 | 18 years and Phase IV training, by selection |
| Additional Director General of Police | 15 | Selection |
| Director General of Police (HAG+) | 16 | Selection |
| Director General of Police (Head of Police Force) | 17 | Selection from DGPs at Level 16 |
Read with the pay table above, this gives the earliest pay the rules allow at each stage. After 5 years of service you can be in the Senior Time Scale, Level 11, with basic pay from ₹67,700 (₹1,08,320 with DA). After 10 years, the Junior Administrative Grade, Level 12, from ₹78,800 (₹1,26,080 with DA). After 20 years, Inspector General, Level 14, from ₹1,44,200 (₹2,30,720 with DA). These are the first cells of each level; increments and pay fixed on promotion usually put an officer higher in the level.
For when each step comes and the training it needs, see the IPS career journey.
How pay grows inside a level
- Annual increments. Each increment moves you to the next cell of the same level. The rules have two increment dates, 1 January and 1 July, depending on when you were appointed or promoted.
- Advance increments. The state sanctions a direct recruit's second and third increments after he or she passes the prescribed departmental examinations. The third is paid retrospectively once probation is completed and the officer is confirmed (rule 10).
- On promotion. You get one increment in your old level and move to the matching cell, or the next higher one, in the new level (rule 5). You can choose to have this done from the date of promotion or from the date of your next increment in the old level. If you choose the later date, the 2023 amendment places you in the next higher cell of the new level on the day you are promoted, and your pay is re-fixed when that increment falls due.
- Parity with the IAS. When an IAS officer of a batch is posted at the Centre at Levels 10 to 15, IPS officers at least two years senior who have not reached that level get it on a non-functional basis (Note 1 under rule 3).
Ranks in the IPS
The pay rules name the ranks from Deputy Inspector General upwards. Below that, the rules speak of grades, and SVPNPA names the ranks: officers start as Assistant Superintendent of Police and later serve as Superintendent of Police. Schedule II of the pay rules lists Superintendent of Police posts among the posts carrying pay in the senior scale, which covers the Senior Time Scale, the Junior Administrative Grade and the Selection Grade (Levels 11 to 13), so an SP's pay depends on which of these grades the officer holds. In a police commissionerate the titles differ. The Delhi list in Schedule II, for example, puts the Commissioner of Police at Level 17, Special Commissioners at Level 15, Joint Commissioners at Level 14 and Additional Commissioners at Level 13A.
Badges of rank
The IPS (Uniform) Rules, 1954 describe the badges in silver metal: the State Emblem, five-pointed stars of the "Star of India" pattern, and a crossed sword and baton. Every IPS officer also wears the letters "I.P.S." at the base of the shoulder strap. The rules group the badges like this:
| Badge | Worn by, as the rules describe them |
|---|---|
| Crossed sword and baton, State Emblem and one star | Director, Intelligence Bureau |
| Crossed sword and baton and State Emblem | Director General and Inspector General of Police in the states the rules list; Director, CBI; Directors General of the CRPF, BSF and Security |
| Crossed sword and baton and one star | Inspectors General of Police in the states, the Union Territory of Mizoram and the Commissioner of Police, Delhi; Additional Inspector General of Police; Joint Director, Intelligence Bureau; Director, National Police Academy, among others |
| State Emblem and three stars | All other officers drawing pay above the time scale, including Selection Grade; Deputy Inspectors General wear the three stars as a triangle, apex upwards |
| State Emblem and two stars | Superintendent of Police in the selection grade; senior time-scale officers with 15 years' service or more |
| State Emblem and one star | District Superintendent of Police; Commandant of a battalion; senior time-scale officers with more than 10 and less than 15 years' service |
| State Emblem | Other senior time-scale officers with 10 years' service or less |
| Three stars | Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of a sub-division or an equivalent post, or with 5 years' service or more |
| Two stars | Assistant Superintendent of Police with at least 2 but less than 5 years' service, not in charge of a sub-division |
| One star | Assistant Superintendent of Police with less than 2 years' service |
Read this table as the rules' own words, not a modern rank chart. The footnotes date these clauses to notifications of 1969, 1975 and 1982, and they name posts as they stood then: the rank of Additional Director General of Police does not appear. "Service" means service counted from the year of allotment. The rules also say the badge follows the rank you actually hold, substantively or officiating.
Frequently asked questions
What is the salary of an IPS officer per month?
Basic pay runs from ₹56,100 a month for a new officer (Level 10) to a fixed ₹2,25,000 for the Director General of Police who heads a police force (Level 17). With dearness allowance at 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026, a new officer's basic pay plus DA is ₹89,760 a month, before house rent allowance, other allowances and deductions.
What is the starting salary of an IPS officer?
The basic pay of a new IPS officer is ₹56,100 a month, the first cell of Level 10 of the pay matrix, where the pay rules fix a direct recruit's initial pay. Under the probation rules you draw pay at this lowest stage from the first year of probation, while you are still in training. Dearness allowance and other allowances are paid on top, so the amount you receive is higher and changes over time.
What is an IPS officer's salary after 5, 10 and 20 years?
The pay rules open each grade after a set number of years, counted from your year of allotment. If each promotion comes as soon as the rules allow, you are in the Senior Time Scale after 5 years (Level 11, ₹67,700 to ₹2,08,700), the Junior Administrative Grade after 10 (Level 12, ₹78,800 to ₹2,09,200) and Inspector General after 20 (Level 14, ₹1,44,200 to ₹2,18,200). Where you sit in each range depends on your increments. The Junior Administrative Grade and Inspector General also need mid-career training, and Inspector General is by selection against a vacancy.
What is the salary of an SP, a DIG and an IG?
The pay rules list Superintendent of Police posts among the posts carrying pay in the senior scale, so an SP is paid in the Senior Time Scale (Level 11, from ₹67,700), the Junior Administrative Grade (Level 12, from ₹78,800) or the Selection Grade (Level 13, from ₹1,23,100), depending on the officer's grade. A Deputy Inspector General is at Level 13A (₹1,31,100 to ₹2,16,600) and an Inspector General at Level 14 (₹1,44,200 to ₹2,18,200), which is ₹2,30,720 a month with dearness allowance at the first cell.
What is the salary of a DGP, the highest pay in the IPS?
The pay rules put the rank of Director General of Police at Level 16 (HAG+), with basic pay of ₹2,05,400 to ₹2,24,400. The DGP (Head of Police Force) is chosen from the officers holding DGP posts at Level 16 and is at Level 17, a fixed basic pay of ₹2,25,000, the highest in the IPS; with dearness allowance that is ₹3,60,000 a month. The posts differ by cadre: in the Goa list, for example, the DGP post is held in the rank of Additional DGP, at Level 15. The pay rules also list some central posts at Level 17, such as the Directors of the Intelligence Bureau and the CBI. DGP posts are filled by selection, not after a set number of years.
What does one star on an IPS officer's shoulder mean?
Under the IPS (Uniform) Rules, a single star alone is the badge of an Assistant Superintendent of Police with less than 2 years' service. The State Emblem with one star is worn by a District Superintendent of Police, a battalion Commandant and senior time-scale officers with more than 10 and less than 15 years' service.
Is Level 13 of the IPS ₹1,18,500 or ₹1,23,100?
₹1,23,100. The matrix printed with the IPS (Pay) Rules in 2016 started Level 13 at ₹1,18,500, but the IPS (Pay) Amendment Rules, 2017 replaced the matrix with effect from 1 January 2016.
